For small-town girl Blakely Henry, any hope of finding her biological parents died when she stopped believing in fairy tales and Disney princesses. That is, until she spots her boarding school’s new British exchange student, Max Ryder, staring at her. Why would a boy who looks like he stepped out of the pages of a magazine be looking at her? Because Max knows something Blakely doesn’t.

Following the tragic demise of one of Europe’s most beloved royal families, Max has stumbled upon information he thinks may lead to a lost royal heir, and now he is on a quest halfway around the world to see if he’s right.

Sworn to secrecy by his university professor and the headmaster of Lakeview Academy, Max is admitted into an exchange program with the sole purpose of finding out the truth. But will his personal feelings for Blakely get in the way?

When a stolen email surfaces, Blakely and her friends’ lives are threatened, and Max starts to question what he is really after.

From the exclusive rolling lawns of Canada’s most prestigious boarding school to the University of Saint Andrews’ hallowed grounds, Blakely’s quiet, unassuming life is turned upside down. Is she really who she thinks she is? Can she survive long enough to help Max unearth the truth?

Halle woke with a start. She could have sworn she felt someone gripping her arm. Fear raked through her body as her eyes focused. The silhouette of a girl floated in the darkness at the foot of her bed. Halle’s heart stopped, paused, and then went on beating.

As she stared, the figure slowly brought both hands together, reaching them out to her, and then faded into nothing.

With an unsteady hand, Halle grabbed the flashlight tucked under her mattress that she used for reading after lights out. The switch clicked and the room lit up with a soft glow. It’s just a dream, she told herself. This can’t possibly be happening.

Halle looked around, wondering if Izzy had gotten up, but she was fast asleep in the bed next to her. She watched Izzy’s chest rise and fall and then scanned the rest of the room, looking for anything that might explain what she had just seen. Her desk seemed in order, nothing looked out of place. The toilet flushed, and Halle released a deep breath, thinking Missy must have wandered in before using the bathroom. She wouldn’t put it past her.

Halle snatched the blanket hanging on the chair next to her bed and spread it out over her comforter; Mrs. Middleton must have forgotten to turn the heat on tonight. Taking a deep breath, she turned off her flashlight and lay back down, willing herself to relax and get back to sleep.

A loud thunk from the other side of her bed caused her to jump. Her eyes flew open, and a new jolt of fear pierced through her. It sounded like a book had just fallen from the shelf above her desk.
Izzy stirred beneath her covers but remained asleep. Halle peered through the darkness, reminding herself not to jump to conclusions.

Her desk lamp flickered on by itself, and Halle could see Elsie’s journal lying on the desk next to her textbooks, the pages fluttering as if caught by the wind until finally settling into place.

She had put the book in her locked drawer beneath her bed hours ago. Halle was paralyzed with fear, her heart pounding hard. The light flickered again and the book was gone. Shaking, Halle pulled her covers over her head. “Go away, please, go away,” she cried quietly.
